Course Location
Portrush is our main location & Coleraine Leisure Centre for Pool work
Timetable is 6 days in total roughly 09.00 - 17.00 each day but is subject to change slightly. Day 6 is the assessment and is normally a half day 4-5 hours . Exact timings and location will be emailed 2 weeks prior to course start date.

NVBLQ Course Pre-Requisites
Every candidate attending a NVBLQ course must:
◦ Before the course, candidates must be able to swim 400 metres in a pool (recommended 25 metres, but no less than 20 metres) in eight minutes or less using a continuous front stroke and showing urgency.
◦ Be 16-years-old
◦ Have a good level of fitness
◦ Surface dive to a depth of 1.5 metres
◦ Tread water for two minutes
◦ Climb out of deep water unaided and without steps
◦ Be competent at swimming in the sea
Fitness Testing
For the assessment, candidates must be able to swim 400 metres in a pool (recommended 25 metres, but no less than 20 metres) in eight minutes or less using a continuous front stroke and showing urgency.
Fitness standard not being met will mean new full course fee will be charged to book into a new course if there is availability.
We recommend that 400 metres timed swim in the pool is completed in under 7 minutes 30 seconds and 200 metre time is under 3 minutes 30 seconds. (This is the RNLI Standards but not essential to pass this course)
We also recommend having surfed or used a rescue board at least 5 times.
This course does not guarantee employment with the RNLI lifeguards but will give you the best opportunity possible.

Our Pool sessions will be at Coleraine leisure centre and all travel to and from here must be arranged by yourselves.
Please be on time for the full course as personal performance is assessed throughout.
100% Attendance is required.
We will do the prerequisite fitness test on the first day which is 400M Swim in the pool in 8 mins or under.
The minimum safety standard not being met (200m in under 5mins) means you cannot proceed with the rest of the course and will have to book onto a new course paying full fee only if there is availability.
We recommend that if applying for RNLI you can do this in under 7 mins 30 seconds and 200m time is under 3 mins 30 secs.
What to bring :
Photographic ID on the first day
- Towel
- Changing Robe (If you have one)
- 5 mm Winter Wetsuit
- Wetsuit boots, Hood and gloves
- Warm clothes and waterproofs.
- Swimwear for the pool (not loose. eg baggy shorts that create drag in water)

Brightly coloured Swim cap (cloth not allowed) silicone only!
- Goggles can be used in timed swims but not for rescues in the sea or other pool skills
- Notepad and pen for theory.
- Whistle (you must have a whistle on the first day, highly important) please purchase a pealess whistle.
- Plenty of drinking water and food (we will stop for plenty of short breaks throughout the day)
- Swim Fins can be used for certain parts of open water swim, but only if you have been doing a lot of training with them.

The water will still be cold so Its essential a good wetsuit at least 5mm ,if you're interested I have some of the warmest suits available on the website at these links below to buy.
I will give everyone on the course a 10% discount code for wetsuits to purchase. Email me for the code. Do not bring a 3mm summer wetsuit to the course as you will be too cold.
If you don't have the required wetsuits just let me know at least 48 hours before the course and I can arrange them on the day hire for £10 per day or I have some used 5mm suits for sale. You will get a break for lunch but need to bring your own lunch or go somewhere close for food.
Course Content
The NVBLQ covers all elements of beach lifeguard theory, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, pool skills and open water skills. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times and lifting. The NVBLQ is comprised of four modules and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification.
• Module 1 – Beach Lifeguarding – Knowledge and Understanding
• Module 2 – Life Support and First Aid
• Module 3– Ocean Skils
• Module 4 – Pool Skills
ASSESSMENT
The NVBLQ assessment takes place at the end of the course. It determines your competence, skills and knowledge of working as a beach lifeguard and assesses your ability to apply the skills and knowledge in a beach environment.
The assessment is split into five elements:
• Beach Lifeguard and First Aid Theory
• Life Support and First Aid
• First Aid Practical
• Ocean Skills
• Pool Skills

The Open Water Lifeguard (OWL) Qualification was developed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) to address the role of open water lifeguards and the needs of open water operators. As the open water industry continues to grow, the RLSS UK have endeavoured to respond to change through the ongoing development of this qualification. The OWL qualification can be used to supervise and provide rescue cover for planned, organised and risk assessed activities in still, non-tidal water.
OWL Course Prerequisites:
Every candidate attending a OWL course must:
- Be 16-years-old or over at the time of assessment
- Be competent and confident in open water
- Be able to submerge under the water confidently

Before the course, candidates must be able to swim at least 400 metres in a pool/ open water swimming continuously on their front and show urgency.
Course Content
The OWL enables candidates with no previous lifeguard experience to become qualified. By attaining this qualification candidates will have been assessed as competent to provide supervision and rescue cover for planned, organised and risk-assessed activities in open water still, non-tidal.
The Open Water Lifeguard Qualification, delivered over three days, is valid for two years and is independently assessed. The candidate manual and trainer resources help the Open Water Lifeguard Trainer Assessor deliver through the three sections:
